Understanding the profit and loss sheet / Pricing for profit

Event Date: 28/01/2021
Location: Online
Start Time: 10:00 am
End Time: 3:00 pm

This day is relevant to anyone involved in the financial performance and productivity of their practice.  The sessions will cover all the financial aspects of managing a veterinary practice, especially how to set-up, understand and use your practice management accounts.  We will also cover the 'differential diagnoses' of high cost of sales, high staff costs and overheads.  The session includes some very simple but effective pricing tactics that stemmed the haemorrhage of uncharged fees virtually overnight at Brian’s own practice.   It finishes with a simple but very useful algorithm that all practices managers should know that helps them conceptualise, diagnose and decide which specific areas they need to address, and how, should they wish to improve their practice’s financial performance.

Setting up on my own: Where do I start?

Event Date: 25/02/2021
Location: Online
Start Time: 10:00 am
End Time: 3:00 pm

This day is relevant to anyone who is considering setting up their own veterinary practice or assisting someone else who is. Brian speaks with many vets who are frustrated by what they perceive as poor management practices at their current practice and who long to be their own boss – but at the same time find the prospect a little daunting.  Brian has set up five practices from scratch and he therefore ideally placed to explain the logistics relating to finding a location, assessing the local market opportunity, sizing up the competition, calculating financial projections and determining borrowings; staff recruitment and training; marketing, getting your head around the legal aspects.  Whilst Brian agrees that it isn’t easy, Brian has never met anyone who regrets doing it…especially when they sell their practice down the line for far more money than they ever thought they would earn.

The psychology of 'Having a quiet word' with misbehaving colleagues

Event Date: 17/06/2021
Location: Online
Start Time: 10:00 am
End Time: 3:00 pm

This day is relevant to anyone who finds the ‘people-management’ part of veterinary practice uncomfortable.   Many managers tolerate unexpected or undesired colleague behaviour for too long and allow molehills to turn into mountains which could have been resolved by ‘Having a quiet word’ earlier.  At the same time we don’t want to jump down people’s throat’s for every misdemeanour; the challenge is to deal with issues proportionally – and informally.  The sessions will look at how we can prevent frustrating behaviour using many of the day-to-day management processes that represent a 'soft' approach to learning and development. We will also cover why various personality types are better at having – and receiving - a quiet word if needed.  We will look at how to have a difficult conversation but in a constructive manner and how to decide if, when, and how to escalate your approach to a more formal disciplinary process.
